Licensure & Recertification Requirements for EMR, EMT, AEMT & Paramedics

Arizona follows NREMT recertification requirements for all provider levels. Providers must maintain a current NREMT certification to renew their Arizona certification. 

Providers renewing through the National Registry must complete the National Continued Competency Program (NCCP), which includes National, Local/State, and Individual education components.

EMR Recertification in Arizona

Nationally Registered EMRs are required to renew their certification every two years by September 30th of their expiration year.

NREMT Requirements

  • National Component: 8 hours
    • Airway, Respiration, & Ventilation: 1.5 hours
    • Cardiology: 2 hours
    • Trauma: 1 hour
    • Medical: 2.5 hours
    • Operations: 1 hour
  • Local/State Component: 4 hours that are flexible but must be directly related to EMS patient care
  • Individual Component: 4 hours that are flexible but must be directly related to EMS patient care
  • New to 2025 NCCP Guidelines, 10% of the 16 total required hours must focus on pediatric topics. EMRs need 1.6 hours specific to pediatric education.

Total: 16 hours

  • New to 2025 NCCP guidelines, 10% of the 40 total required hours must focus on pediatric topics. EMTs need 4 hours of pediatric-specific continuing education.
