Ohio Recertification Requirements for EMr, EMT, AEMT, & Paramedic
Impact EMS Training offers 100% online continuing education designed to help EMS professionals maintain their National Registry of EMTs (NREMT) certification. Ohio EMS providers are regulated by the Ohio Department of Public Safety, Division of Emergency Medical Services (Ohio EMS).
Ohio maintains its own certification requirements, which are different from National Registry recertification requirements. Holding National Registry certification alone does not authorize you to practice in Ohio. EMS professionals must also maintain an active Ohio Certificate to Practice.
Ohio certifications renew every 3 years through the Ohio EMS Provider Portal.
If you are applying for an Ohio Certificate to Practice through reciprocity or endorsement, please verify with the Ohio Division of EMS what additional documentation or steps are required. Requirements vary depending on your current certification and credentials.
Impact EMS Training is a vetted national EMS education provider and an approved National Registry of EMTs education program (Program #5334). Upon successfully completing one of our initial education programs and passing the National Registry Computer Adaptive Test (CAT), eligible students may earn National Registry certification.
Please note: Ohio’s renewal requirements differ from the National Registry’s National Continued Competency Program (NCCP). While Impact EMS Training refresher courses can be used to maintain your National Registry certification, Impact EMS Training does not currently offer a complete Ohio recertification program. Ohio renewal requirements may vary depending on how long your Ohio certification has been active. Always verify your renewal requirements directly with the Ohio Division of EMS.
Ohio EMR Recertification
National Registry Emergency Medical Responder (NREMR) certification renews every 2 years. Ohio EMS providers must also meet the state’s separate renewal requirements every 3 years to maintain an active Ohio Certificate to Practice.
NREMT Requirements:
Total Continuing Education Required: 16 hours
The National Registry requires 16 hours of continuing education for Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) recertification through the National Continued Competency Program (NCCP). These hours are divided among three components:
National Component: 8 hours
- Medical: 3 hours
- Cardiovascular: 2.5 hours
- Airway, Respiration, & Ventilation: 1 hour
- Operations: 1 hour
- Trauma: 0.5 hours
Local/State Component: 4 hours
- Education determined by local EMS agencies, medical directors, employers, or state EMS offices to address local practice needs.
Individual Component: 4 hours
- Education selected by the provider based on individual learning needs or areas of practice.

CAPCE accredits CE for EMS professionals globally, while NREMT administers certification exams for EMS professionals at different levels.

The National Registry requires 60 hours of continuing education for Paramedic recertification through the National Continued Competency Program (NCCP). These hours are divided among three components:
National Component: 30 hours
- Medical: 8.5 hours
- Cardiovascular: 8.5 hours
- Operations: 6.5 hours
- Airway: 3.5 hours
- Trauma: 3 hours
Local/State Component: 15 hours
- Education determined by local EMS agencies, medical directors, employers, or state EMS offices to address local practice needs.
Individual Component: 15 hours
- Education selected by the provider based on individual learning needs or areas of practice.
